Beginning in the 90ies, upon request of the Cambodian government a tribunal was organized to prosecute senior leadership of the Khmer Rouge under the lead of the United Nations.
Trials started in 2007 and lasted till 2019. They incorporated several novelties in comparison to previous tribunal. For example, judges were a mix of Cambodian judges and international ones. Also private persons could become plaintiffs. In total 10 people were indicted of which 3 were convicted, of which 1 is serving his life sentence to this day (Aug 14th 2026).

The following deals extensively with forced marriages. While these crimes may not be as bloody and visceral as the physical tortures and killings, they still show the radical extent of their ideology. Humans are deprived of the last bit of individuality and are exclusively perceived as functioning elements in a state apparatus. The details that follow are just incredible, and I have never heard of anything comparable at that scale in history.
